Sikkim Trip Cost for Couples — What You'll Actually Spend
My wife and I blew through our Sikkim budget on day three. Classic rookie mistake — we hadn't planned for the mandatory North Sikkim tour package, and that alone ate up a chunk of what we'd set aside for the whole trip. So I'm writing this so you don't do what we did. Here's the actual sikkim trip cost for couple in 2026, broken down by days, categories, and trip styles, with zero sugarcoating.
Quick answer: A couple visiting Sikkim in 2026 should budget between INR 25,000-35,000 for 5 days (budget), INR 40,000-65,000 for 7 days (mid-range), and INR 70,000-1,20,000 for 10 days (comfortable). These numbers include flights, stays, food, transport, and permits — but not shopping or alcohol.
Now let's break every rupee down.
Getting to Sikkim: Flight Costs from Major Cities
Bagdogra (IXB) is your gateway airport. From there, it's a 4-hour drive (or a shared jeep ride) up to Gangtok. There's no airport in Sikkim itself, so everyone lands here.
Flight prices swing wildly depending on when you book and which month you're flying. Here's what you're looking at in 2026:
| Departure City | Budget Airline (per person) | Full-Service Airline (per person) | Cost for Couple (Budget) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi | INR 4,500 - 7,000 | INR 7,500 - 11,000 | INR 9,000 - 14,000 |
| Mumbai | INR 5,500 - 9,000 | INR 9,000 - 14,000 | INR 11,000 - 18,000 |
| Kolkata | INR 3,000 - 5,000 | INR 5,000 - 7,500 | INR 6,000 - 10,000 |
| Bangalore | INR 6,000 - 10,000 | INR 10,000 - 16,000 | INR 12,000 - 20,000 |
| Chennai | INR 5,500 - 9,500 | INR 9,500 - 15,000 | INR 11,000 - 19,000 |
| Hyderabad | INR 5,000 - 8,500 | INR 8,500 - 13,000 | INR 10,000 - 17,000 |
Pro tip: Kolkata flights are the cheapest and most frequent. If you're coming from the south, consider a Kolkata layover — you'll often save INR 3,000-5,000 per person even after accounting for the connection.
Book 45-60 days in advance for the best fares. Peak season (October-November and March-April) pushes prices up by 30-40%.
Bagdogra to Gangtok transport: A shared jeep costs INR 350-400 per person (takes about 4.5 hours). A reserved Innova for two costs INR 3,500-4,500. If you've just landed after a long flight, splurge on the private cab — those shared jeep seats get cramped fast.
Accommodation: Where Couples Actually Want to Stay
Here's something nobody tells you — Sikkim has plenty of decent couple-friendly hotels, but the gap between "budget" and "mid-range" is bigger than you'd expect. A INR 800/night room might have damp walls and a dodgy geyser, while spending just INR 500-700 more gets you something genuinely nice.
| Category | Price Range (per night) | What You Get | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | INR 800 - 1,500 | Basic room, hot water (usually), WiFi (sometimes), shared balcony | Backpacker couples watching every rupee |
| Mid-Range | INR 1,500 - 3,500 | Clean room, reliable hot water, mountain view, attached bathroom, decent bed | Most couples, first-time visitors |
| Upper Mid-Range | INR 3,500 - 6,000 | Room heater, valley/mountain view, good restaurant, room service | Honeymoon couples wanting comfort |
| Luxury/Boutique | INR 6,000 - 15,000 | Mayal Liang (Gangtok), Elgin Nor-Khill, Denzong Regency, spa access, premium views | Special occasions, luxury honeymoons |
| Heritage/Premium | INR 15,000 - 35,000+ | The Khangri, Mayfair Spa Resort — full luxury experience | Money-no-bar honeymoons |
Couple-specific picks I'd actually recommend:
- Gangtok (budget): Hotel Sonam Delek or Hotel Tibet — around INR 1,800-2,200/night, clean, central, Kanchenjunga views from some rooms.
- Gangtok (mid-range): Summit Golden Crescent — INR 3,000-4,000/night. The rooftop restaurant has one of the best views in town.
- Gangtok (splurge): Mayfair Spa Resort — INR 12,000-18,000/night. Yes, it's a lot, but if you're doing a honeymoon, that one-night splurge might be worth it.
- Pelling (mid-range): Hotel Kabur — INR 2,000-2,800/night. The Kanchenjunga sunrise from here is absurd.
- Pelling (splurge): Elgin Mount Pandim — INR 8,000-12,000/night. Old-world charm, gorgeous grounds.
Avoid the MG Marg trap in Gangtok. Hotels right on MG Marg charge a premium for the location, but most aren't particularly nice inside. Stay a 5-10 minute walk away and you'll get a better room for less money. Plus, MG Marg gets loud on weekends.
North Sikkim Tour Package Cost (You Can't Skip This)
Here's the thing about North Sikkim — you can't just go on your own. Indian tourists need a Protected Area Permit (PAP), and the only way to get it is through a registered tour operator. That means a mandatory packaged tour. No exceptions.
Check our North Sikkim permit guide for the full permit process, but here's the cost breakdown:
| Package Type | Duration | Cost Per Person | Cost for Couple | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shared Vehicle (Budget) | 2N/3D | INR 4,500 - 6,000 | INR 9,000 - 12,000 | Shared jeep, basic hotel, meals, permit |
| Private Vehicle (Mid-Range) | 2N/3D | INR 7,000 - 9,000 | INR 14,000 - 18,000 | Private Bolero/Sumo, better hotel, meals, permit |
| Private Vehicle (Premium) | 3N/4D | INR 10,000 - 14,000 | INR 20,000 - 28,000 | Private Innova, good hotels, all meals, Gurudongmar + Yumthang |
The 2N/3D package covers Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, and Zero Point. If you add Gurudongmar Lake, it usually becomes a 3N/4D affair and costs more — but honestly, Gurudongmar is worth every extra rupee. That lake at 17,800 feet is something else entirely.
Honest negative: The shared jeep packages cram 10 people into a Bolero. It's uncomfortable, you can't stop where you want, and if anyone in the group is a slow eater, you're all delayed. For couples, I'd strongly suggest going private or at least semi-private (4-person group). The extra INR 2,000-3,000 per person buys you a massively better experience.
Pelling: Costs and What to Expect
Pelling is quieter than Gangtok, less touristy, and has arguably the best Kanchenjunga views in Sikkim. Two nights here is ideal for couples.
- Hotel (mid-range): INR 2,000-3,500/night
- Local sightseeing (shared cab for Skywalk, Rabdentse, Kecheopalri Lake, Khecheopalri): INR 1,500-2,500 for the full day
- Private cab for sightseeing: INR 3,000-4,000
- Pelling to Gangtok transfer: INR 3,500-4,500 by reserved vehicle (shared jeeps available for ~INR 300/person but uncomfortable)
The pelling gangtok trip cost for a couple doing both destinations over 4-5 days comes out to roughly INR 18,000-30,000 (excluding flights), depending on how you travel.
Food Costs: Eating as a Couple in Sikkim
Sikkim food is genuinely good and surprisingly affordable. Momos are everywhere (obviously), but don't sleep on thukpa, gyathuk, and the local Sikkimese thali.
A meal-by-meal breakdown for two people:
| Meal | Budget Option (for 2) | Mid-Range (for 2) | Splurge (for 2) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | INR 150-250 (tea + paratha/bread at local eatery) | INR 300-500 (hotel breakfast or cafe) | INR 500-800 (hotel restaurant buffet) |
| Lunch | INR 200-350 (thali at local dhaba) | INR 400-700 (restaurant on MG Marg) | INR 700-1,200 (sit-down restaurant) |
| Dinner | INR 250-400 (local restaurant) | INR 500-900 (mid-range restaurant) | INR 900-1,800 (hotel restaurant/fine dining) |
| Snacks/Tea | INR 100-150 | INR 150-250 | INR 250-400 |
| Daily Total | INR 700-1,150 | INR 1,350-2,350 | INR 2,350-4,200 |
Places we liked in Gangtok: Baker's Cafe on MG Marg for breakfast (their pancakes are actually good). Taste of Tibet for momos and thukpa — cheap, filling, no frills. The Roll House for quick bites. For a nicer dinner, try Dragon Wok or the restaurant at Hotel Tibet.
In Pelling: options are limited. Most couples end up eating at their hotel, which is usually fine. The restaurants near the helipad area serve decent food.
Booze heads-up: Sikkim has some of the cheapest alcohol in India thanks to low taxes. A Budweiser is around INR 100-120, and local spirits are dirt cheap. But restaurant markups can still sting — buy from shops and drink at your hotel if you're watching costs.
Transport Costs Within Sikkim
Getting around Sikkim is where your budget can balloon. The roads are windy (and sometimes wrecked from landslides), distances are deceptive, and there's no Uber or Ola here.
| Route | Shared Jeep (per person) | Reserved Vehicle (whole vehicle) | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bagdogra to Gangtok | INR 350-400 | INR 3,500-4,500 | 4-5 hours |
| Gangtok Local Sightseeing (full day) | INR 400-500 (shared taxi) | INR 2,500-3,500 | Full day |
| Gangtok to Pelling | INR 300-350 | INR 3,500-4,500 | 5-6 hours |
| Gangtok to Nathula (return) | INR 600-800 (shared) | INR 3,500-4,000 | Full day |
| Pelling Local Sightseeing | INR 300-400 (shared) | INR 2,000-3,000 | Half/full day |
| Gangtok to Bagdogra | INR 350-400 | INR 3,500-4,500 | 4-5 hours |
My honest take: Shared jeeps save money but destroy comfort. For a couple's trip — especially a honeymoon — a reserved vehicle makes the whole experience 10x better. You stop where you want, leave when you want, and don't have a stranger's elbow in your rib for five hours.
If you're doing a full Sikkim trip, many couples hire a vehicle for the entire duration. A dedicated Innova/Xylo with driver for 7 days costs roughly INR 18,000-25,000 (all inclusive — fuel, driver meals, parking). Split between a couple, that's INR 9,000-12,500 per person. Expensive, but convenient.

5-Day Sikkim Trip Budget for Couples
This is the minimum I'd recommend. You'll cover Gangtok and either Pelling or Nathula, but not both. And forget North Sikkim — there's just not enough time.
Suggested route: Bagdogra - Gangtok (3N) - Nathula day trip - Bagdogra
| Day | Activity | Accommodation | Transport | Food | Other | Daily Total (Couple) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive Bagdogra, drive to Gangtok, MG Marg evening walk | INR 2,000 | INR 3,500 (pvt cab to Gangtok) | INR 1,000 | - | INR 6,500 |

7-Day Sikkim Trip Budget for Couples
Seven days is the sweet spot. You can do Gangtok, Nathula, and either North Sikkim or Pelling. Most couples go with North Sikkim because it's the showstopper — Yumthang Valley, Zero Point, and possibly Gurudongmar Lake.
Suggested route: Bagdogra - Gangtok (2N) - North Sikkim (2N/3D package) - Gangtok (1N) - Bagdogra
| Day | Activity | Accommodation | Transport | Food | Other | Daily Total (Couple) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive Bagdogra, drive to Gangtok | INR 2,500 | INR 3,500 | INR 1,000 | - | INR 7,000 |
| Day 2 | Gangtok sightseeing + Nathula | INR 2,500 | INR 3,500 | INR 1,200 | INR 500 (permits + entry) | INR 7,700 |

| Day 7 | Drive to Bagdogra, fly out | - | INR 3,500 | INR 600 | - | INR 4,100 |
| North Sikkim Package (private, couple) | INR 16,000 | |||||
| Subtotal (on-ground) | INR 43,600 |
| Budget Tier | On-Ground Cost | Flights (Delhi) | Total for Couple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | INR 32,000-38,000 | INR 9,000-14,000 | INR 41,000-52,000 |
| Mid-Range | INR 43,000-55,000 | INR 9,000-14,000 | INR 52,000-69,000 |
| Comfortable | INR 55,000-72,000 | INR 9,000-14,000 | INR 64,000-86,000 |
The north sikkim tour package cost is the biggest single expense on a 7-day trip. Don't cheap out on it — the shared packages are miserable, and you'll regret not spending the extra money.
10-Day Sikkim Trip Budget for Couples
Ten days lets you do everything — Gangtok, North Sikkim, Pelling, Ravangla, and even a quick stop at Namchi. This is the full Sikkim experience.

Category-Wise Total: Where Your Money Actually Goes
Here's a reality check. Across all three trip lengths, this is roughly how your money splits:
| Expense Category | 5-Day Couple Trip | 7-Day Couple Trip | 10-Day Couple Trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flights (from Delhi) | INR 9,000-14,000 | INR 9,000-14,000 | INR 9,000-14,000 |
| Accommodation | INR 8,000-16,000 | INR 10,000-20,000 | INR 20,000-35,000 |
| Transport (local) | INR 6,000-14,000 | INR 8,000-12,000 | INR 17,000-22,000 |
| North Sikkim Package | N/A | INR 12,000-20,000 | INR 18,000-28,000 |
| Food & Drinks | INR 4,000-7,000 | INR 6,000-12,000 | INR 10,000-18,000 |
| Permits & Entry Fees | INR 500-1,000 | INR 800-1,500 | INR 1,200-2,000 |
| Miscellaneous | INR 2,000-3,000 | INR 3,000-5,000 | INR 4,000-6,000 |
| Total | INR 29,500-55,000 | INR 48,800-84,500 | INR 79,200-1,25,000 |
The sikkim trip budget per person works out to roughly INR 15,000-27,500 (5 days), INR 24,400-42,250 (7 days), and INR 39,600-62,500 (10 days). Couples have it slightly better than solo travelers since you're splitting room and vehicle costs.
Sikkim Honeymoon Trip Cost: Romance-Specific Tips
Okay, let's talk honeymoon. The sikkim honeymoon trip cost is higher than a regular couple trip because, well, you're probably not going to stay in a INR 1,200/night room with patchy hot water on your honeymoon. Fair enough.
Best romantic stays:
- Mayfair Spa Resort, Gangtok (INR 12,000-18,000/night) — The spa is legit. The rooms are warm. You can see Kanchenjunga from the bathtub in some suites.
- Elgin Nor-Khill, Gangtok (INR 8,000-14,000/night) — Heritage property, feels like stepping into a different era. Beautiful gardens.
- The Elgin Mount Pandim, Pelling (INR 8,000-12,000/night) — Wake up to the most ridiculous mountain view of your life.
- Chumbi Mountain Retreat, Pelling (INR 5,000-8,000/night) — More affordable luxury, amazing for couples.
Honeymoon-worthy experiences:
- Sunrise at Tashi Viewpoint, Gangtok (free, but wake up at 4:30 AM)
- Private vehicle to Gurudongmar Lake (the drive itself is extraordinary)
- Overnight at a homestay in Lachung — genuinely cozy, and the stars at that altitude are unreal
- Couples' spa at Mayfair (INR 4,000-6,000 for a couple's package)
- Hot stone bath in Pelling (some resorts offer traditional Sikkimese hot stone baths — around INR 1,500-2,500 for two)
Realistic honeymoon budget (7 days): INR 70,000-1,10,000 for a couple. That gets you nice hotels, a private vehicle throughout, a good North Sikkim package, and a couple of special meals.
For the best season to visit, check our guide on the best time to visit northeast India. Short version: October-November for clear skies and mountain views, March-May for rhododendrons and pleasant weather. Avoid monsoon (June-September) unless you enjoy landslides and cancelled plans.
Money-Saving Tips That Actually Work
I've read a lot of "budget tips" for Sikkim that are either obvious or useless. Here's what actually saves you real money:
- Fly to Kolkata first, then to Bagdogra. Two separate bookings often cost less than a direct flight from south India. We saved INR 4,000 per person this way.
- Book North Sikkim packages from Gangtok, not online. Tour operators on MG Marg charge 15-25% less than what you'll find on travel websites. Walk into 3-4 shops, compare, bargain a little. You'll get better rates and can choose your vehicle.
- Eat where locals eat. The restaurant at New Dorado on MG Marg looks like nothing special, but the thukpa is incredible and costs a third of what the "tourist" restaurants charge two doors down.
- Travel in shoulder season (early March or late November). Hotel rates drop 30-40%, flights are cheaper, and the weather is still manageable. You'll deal with fewer crowds at Nathula and Tsomgo Lake too.
- Share the North Sikkim package with another couple. If you find another couple at your hotel or on MG Marg who's booking the same dates, splitting a private vehicle between four people cuts the transport cost nearly in half while still being way better than a shared jeep.
- Skip the ropeway in Gangtok. It costs INR 270 per person for a 15-minute ride. The views are nice, but honestly, you get better views for free from Tashi Viewpoint and Ganesh Tok.
- Carry snacks from Siliguri/Bagdogra. Food options on the road to North Sikkim are limited and overpriced. Stock up on biscuits, chips, and water bottles before heading out.

Best Time for Couples to Visit Sikkim
| Season | Months | Pros | Cons | Couple Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | March - May | Rhododendrons bloom, pleasant weather, great for Pelling and Gangtok | April can get crowded, May starts getting warm at lower altitudes | Great |
| Summer/Monsoon | June - September | Lush green, fewer tourists, cheapest rates | Landslides, road closures, North Sikkim routes often blocked, leeches on treks | Avoid |
| Autumn | October - November | Clearest skies, best mountain views, perfect temperatures, post-monsoon freshness | Peak season pricing, crowded at Nathula and Tsomgo | Best |
| Winter | December - February | Snow at higher altitudes, very few tourists, cheapest hotel rates | Gurudongmar Lake road closed, some North Sikkim routes inaccessible, very cold | Good (if you like cold) |
October is hands-down the best month for couples. The skies are clear, Kanchenjunga shows up almost every morning, the temperatures are comfortable, and the post-monsoon greenery makes everything look gorgeous. The downside? Everyone knows this, so book early.
Honeymoon couples: March is underrated. The rhododendron bloom in Yumthang Valley (late March to mid-April) is genuinely one of the most beautiful things in India. Yes, I'm being serious. It's that good. The valley floor turns pink and red, and there's still snow on the peaks above.
The Real Sikkim Trip Expenses 2026: What People Actually Spend
I polled a few friends and travel groups. Here's what real couples actually spent on their Sikkim trips in late 2025 and early 2026:
- Ankit & Priya (5 days, budget): INR 28,000 total. Shared jeeps everywhere, budget hotels, ate at dhabas. "It was fine, but I wish we'd spent a bit more on transport."
- Rohan & Sneha (7 days, mid-range): INR 58,000 total. Private vehicle for North Sikkim, mid-range hotels, ate well. "Perfect. Wouldn't change a thing."
- Varun & Meera (10 days, comfortable): INR 1,05,000 total. Nice hotels, private Innova for the whole trip, two nights at Mayfair. "Splurged on the hotel, but the experience was worth it."
- Deepak & Ritu (7 days, honeymoon): INR 82,000 total. Boutique hotels, private vehicle, special dinner at Nor-Khill. "Best trip of our lives."
Your gangtok trip cost alone (without North Sikkim or Pelling) works out to roughly INR 3,000-6,000 per day for a couple, depending on how you eat and sleep.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a 7-day Sikkim trip cost for a couple?
A 7-day Sikkim trip costs between INR 41,000 (budget) and INR 86,000 (comfortable) for a couple in 2026, including flights from Delhi, accommodation, food, transport, and a North Sikkim package. The mid-range sweet spot is around INR 52,000-69,000. The biggest variable is your North Sikkim package choice and hotel category.
Is Sikkim expensive for couples compared to other hill stations?
No. Sikkim is actually more affordable than Shimla, Manali, or Darjeeling for comparable quality. Hotel rates are lower, food is cheaper, and you get far more dramatic scenery per rupee. The only thing that pushes costs up is the mandatory North Sikkim tour package, but even that is reasonable for what you get.
Can we plan a Sikkim trip under INR 30,000 for two people?
Possible for a tight 5-day trip if you fly from Kolkata (cheapest flights), use shared jeeps, stay in budget hotels, and skip North Sikkim. But honestly, I wouldn't recommend it. You'll spend most of your time in uncomfortable transport and won't see the best parts of Sikkim. Budget at least INR 35,000-40,000 for a 5-day trip that's actually enjoyable.
What is the North Sikkim tour package cost for couples in 2026?
A 2N/3D North Sikkim package costs INR 9,000-12,000 for a couple (shared vehicle) or INR 14,000-18,000 (private vehicle). A 3N/4D package with Gurudongmar Lake runs INR 20,000-28,000 for a private vehicle. All packages include permits, accommodation, meals, and transport. Book directly from operators on MG Marg in Gangtok for the best rates.
Do we need permits for Sikkim, and how much do they cost?
Indian tourists don't need a special permit to enter Sikkim (you just show your ID at the checkpoint). However, you DO need permits for: Nathula Pass (INR 200/person, arranged through tour operator), North Sikkim/Gurudongmar (included in your tour package), and Tsomgo Lake (INR 200/person, usually included in Nathula package). Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit — check our permit guide for details.
Is Sikkim safe for couples and honeymooners?
Very safe. Sikkim consistently ranks as one of the safest states in India. People are genuinely friendly, crime against tourists is extremely rare, and you'll see couples (including honeymooners) everywhere in Gangtok and Pelling. The only real safety concerns are road conditions during monsoon and altitude sickness above 14,000 feet. Stick to the tourist routes, and you'll have zero issues.
Bottom line: Sikkim is one of the best value-for-money destinations in India for couples. The mountains are extraordinary, the food is good, the people are warm, and your money goes further than you'd expect. Just don't make my mistake — budget for that North Sikkim package upfront, carry enough cash, and please, please get the private vehicle. Your knees will thank you.
