The 5-Day Sikkim Itinerary
Day 1: Bagdogra → Gangtok (125 km, 4 hrs)
- Morning: Arrive Bagdogra. Shared taxi to Gangtok from the SNT stand (300 INR/person, leaves when full) or pre-book a private cab (3,000 INR). The drive climbs through the Teesta valley — gorgeous river views the entire way.
- Afternoon: Check into your hotel, freshen up. Walk to MG Marg — Gangtok's pedestrian-only market street. Clean, well-maintained, lined with cafes and shops. Good for orientation.
- Evening: Try thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup) and momos at any local restaurant on MG Marg. Pork momos are the local specialty. Budget 200–400 INR for a filling dinner.
Stay: Gangtok — 800–3,000 INR/night depending on budget. Hotels around MG Marg offer the best location.
Day 2: Gangtok Sightseeing
- Morning: Rumtek Monastery (12 km from town) — Sikkim's largest monastery and seat of the Karmapa. Beautiful Tibetan architecture, peaceful grounds. Taxi 500–800 INR return. Carry your ID for the security checkpoint.
- Afternoon: Enchey Monastery (hilltop location, good views), Gangtok Ropeway (100 INR, 10-minute ride over the city), and Flower Show Hall near White Memorial Hall.
- Evening: Sunset from Tashi Viewpoint for Kanchenjunga views on a clear day. Return to MG Marg for shopping — pick up Sikkimese organic tea, handwoven textiles, or Tibetan handicrafts.
Book your Day 3 Nathula permit TODAY through a local tour operator. Cost: 2,500–3,500 INR per person including vehicle, driver, and permit fees. You cannot visit Nathula independently — it must be a registered tour. Carry 2 passport-size photos and an ID photocopy.
Stay: Gangtok — same hotel as Day 1.
Day 3: Tsomgo Lake & Nathula Pass
- Morning (7 AM departure): Drive to Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) — 40 km, 2 hours. Sits at 12,400 ft, surrounded by mountains. The lake is partially frozen in winter, emerald green in summer. Yak rides available (200–300 INR) for photos.
- Midday: Continue to Nathula Pass (14,140 ft) — the India-China border. Military checkpoint, prayer flags strung across the pass, snow on the ground most of the year. You can see Chinese soldiers on the other side. Surreal experience. Spend 30–45 minutes maximum — altitude hits fast.
- Afternoon: Return via Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple — a shrine dedicated to an Indian soldier believed to guard the border. Interesting story, quick stop. Back in Gangtok by evening.
Nathula Pass sits at 14,140 ft. Altitude sickness is real — headache, nausea, breathlessness are common. Carry Diamox (consult your doctor first), stay hydrated, and avoid running or sudden exertion. Nathula is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Plan your itinerary accordingly.
Stay: Gangtok — same hotel.
Day 4: Gangtok → Pelling (130 km, 5 hrs)
- Morning: Depart for Pelling. Stop en route at Buddha Park in Ravangla — a 130-ft seated Buddha statue surrounded by manicured gardens with Himalayan views. Free entry, 30–45 minute stop.
- Afternoon: Arrive Pelling. Check in, then head to the Kanchenjunga viewpoint — Pelling's main draw. On clear days, the third-highest mountain in the world fills the horizon. Walk to Rabdentse Ruins (the old Sikkimese capital) nearby.
- Evening: Visit Pemayangtse Monastery — one of Sikkim's oldest (1705). The 3D wooden model of the heavenly palace on the top floor is remarkable. Entry 20 INR.
Stay: Pelling — 700–2,500 INR/night. Book a room with a mountain-facing window — the sunrise over Kanchenjunga is worth the early alarm.
Day 5: Pelling → Bagdogra (145 km, 5 hrs)
- Morning: Pelling Skywalk — a glass-floor bridge over a gorge with panoramic Kanchenjunga views. Opened recently, 100 INR entry. Quick but memorable stop.
- Drive: Head to Bagdogra (145 km, 5 hrs) via Jorethang. The road is scenic but winding — leave by 9 AM if you have an afternoon flight.
If you have a 6th day, add Namchi on the way back. The Char Dham temple complex (replicas of all four dhams) and the 135-ft Guru Padmasambhava statue are both worth the 1–2 hour detour. Namchi is 90 km from Pelling and 75 km from Bagdogra.

5 Quick Tips
- Carry cash. ATMs are available in Gangtok and Pelling town but often run out. UPI coverage is spotty beyond Gangtok. Withdraw enough cash on Day 1 to last the trip — at least 5,000 INR beyond what you plan to pay digitally.
- Layer your clothing. Gangtok (5,400 ft) is pleasant, but Nathula (14,140 ft) is freezing even in May. Pack thermals, a down jacket, and gloves for Day 3. You can rent heavy jackets at Tsomgo Lake for 100–200 INR if you forget.
- Book the Nathula permit a day in advance. Your tour operator needs your photos and ID copies. Last-minute bookings often fail. Foreign nationals cannot visit Nathula — check our permit guide for alternatives.
- Carry Diamox for altitude. Consult your doctor before the trip. Start taking it a day before the Nathula excursion. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol the night before, and do not push through severe headaches.
- Start early every day. Mountain weather deteriorates after midday. Morning drives are clearer, viewpoints less cloudy, and you avoid traffic on the narrow mountain roads.
Plan Your Sikkim Trip
Five days is enough to see Sikkim's highlights without rushing. You get Gangtok's monasteries, the high-altitude thrill of Nathula Pass, and the jaw-dropping Kanchenjunga panorama from Pelling. For a longer trip, combine this with Meghalaya or add North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang Valley) for a 7–8 day route.
