Assam is the gateway to Northeast India and the easiest state to explore. This 4-day itinerary covers the highlights: Guwahati's temples and riverfront, a proper rhino safari at Kaziranga National Park, and an optional extension to Majuli — the world's largest river island. No permits, no altitude worries, straightforward logistics.

Guwahati Airport (GAU) has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Chennai. IndiGo and SpiceJet fares start around 3,000 INR one-way booked 2–3 weeks out.

The 4-Day Assam Itinerary

Day 1: Guwahati

  • Morning: Kamakhya Temple — one of India's most important Shakti Peethas, sitting atop Nilachal Hill. Arrive by 7 AM to beat the queue (it can stretch to 2+ hours by midday). Non-Hindus can visit the outer complex and enjoy panoramic views of the Brahmaputra. Free entry.
  • Afternoon: Take the ferry to Umananda Island (20 INR, 15-minute ride from Kachari Ghat) — the smallest inhabited river island in the world. Shiva temple at the top, golden langurs in the trees. Back on the mainland, walk along the Brahmaputra riverfront — wide, breezy, and great for photos at sunset.
  • Evening: Fancy Bazaar for local shopping (silk, bamboo crafts, Assamese gamosa towels), then find an Assamese thali dinner — rice, dal, fish curry, khar (an alkaline preparation unique to Assam), and tamul-paan. Budget 150–300 INR at a local restaurant.

Stay: Guwahati — 600–2,500 INR/night. Paltan Bazaar area is the most convenient for transport connections.

Day 2: Guwahati → Kaziranga (220 km, 5 hrs)

  • Morning: Leave early. Drive to Kaziranga National Park (220 km, 5 hours on NH-37). You can also take a state bus from ISBT Guwahati (400 INR, 6 hours) or book a private cab (4,000–5,000 INR one way).
  • Afternoon: Check into your lodge near the Central Range (Kohora) gate. Most budget and mid-range options cluster here. Settle in and explore the nearby area.
  • Evening: Book your jeep safari for the next morning at the forest office or through your lodge. Jeep safari: 3,500 INR per vehicle (fits 6 people). Book the Central Range for the best rhino sightings.
CRITICAL

Kaziranga National Park is CLOSED from June to October every year due to monsoon flooding. The Brahmaputra inundates the entire park. Do not plan your trip during these months. The park typically reopens in late October or early November — check the official forest department website before booking.

Stay: Kaziranga (near Kohora gate) — 800–3,000 INR/night. Lodges here are basic but clean, and most include meals.

Day 3: Kaziranga Safari Day

  • Early morning (5:30 AM): Jeep safari — Central Range. This is the main event. Three to four hours driving through tall elephant grass and wetlands. The one-horned rhinoceros is the star — Kaziranga has over 2,400 of them, two-thirds of the world population. You will also likely see wild Asian elephants, water buffalo, swamp deer, and if you are very lucky, a Bengal tiger. Carry binoculars and a zoom lens.
  • Afternoon: Western Range jeep safari (3,500 INR per vehicle) or an elephant safari (1,200 INR per person, 1 hour). Western Range is less crowded, has large herds of wild buffalo, and offers a different landscape. Alternatively, rest at your lodge — two safaris in one day is tiring but rewarding.
  • Evening: Visit a tea garden near Kaziranga. Several estates offer walks and tastings. Assam produces more than half of India's tea, and seeing the endless green rows up close is a peaceful contrast to the morning's wildlife excitement.
SAFARI STRATEGY

Central Range has the highest density of rhinos — you are almost guaranteed sightings. Western Range is quieter with better wild buffalo herds. Eastern Range is the most remote and least visited. If you have time and budget, book Central in the morning and Western in the afternoon for the best variety.

Stay: Kaziranga — same lodge as Day 2.

Day 4: Kaziranga → Guwahati (or Majuli Extension)

Option A: Return to Guwahati (220 km, 5 hrs)

  • Drive back to Guwahati for your evening flight or train. Stop for lunch at one of the highway dhabas — the fish curry at roadside restaurants along NH-37 is consistently good.

Option B: Majuli Island Extension (+1 day)

  • Morning: Drive from Kaziranga to Jorhat (95 km, 2.5 hrs). From Jorhat, take the Nimati Ghat ferry to Majuli Island (1 hour, 20 INR for passengers). Ferries run roughly hourly from 10 AM to 3 PM.
  • Afternoon: Explore Majuli — the world's largest river island and a centre of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture. Visit the Satras (monasteries) where monks preserve 500-year-old traditions of dance, music, and mask-making. Kamalabari Satra and Auniati Satra are the most accessible.
  • Evening: Rent a bicycle (50–100 INR/day) and ride through the island's rice paddies and wetlands. The flat terrain and quiet roads make this one of the most peaceful cycling experiences in India.
  • Next morning: Ferry back to Jorhat, drive to Guwahati (310 km, 6 hrs) or fly from Jorhat Airport (limited flights to Kolkata and Delhi).
MAJULI TIP

Majuli is slowly eroding — the island loses land to the Brahmaputra every monsoon. Visit now while the Satras and traditional way of life are still intact. Accommodation is basic (bamboo huts and guesthouses, 500–1,200 INR/night) but the cultural experience is irreplaceable.

5 Quick Tips

  1. Check Kaziranga's opening dates. The park closes June–October without exception. It usually reopens in the last week of October or first week of November. November to February is peak season with the best wildlife sightings and cool weather.
  2. Book safaris a day in advance. Walk-in safari slots can sell out during peak season (December–January), especially for the Central Range morning jeep. Your lodge can usually arrange this for you. Online booking is available on the Assam Forest Department website.
  3. Carry mosquito repellent. Kaziranga is lowland wetland — mosquitoes are aggressive, especially around dusk. DEET-based repellent or Odomos cream is essential. Long sleeves and trousers for the evening safari help significantly.
  4. Reach Kamakhya Temple early. The queue situation at Kamakhya is unpredictable. Weekdays before 8 AM give you the best chance of a short wait. During Ambubachi Mela (June), the temple is closed for 3 days and the surrounding area is extremely crowded.
  5. Assam is hot and humid. Daytime temperatures hit 30–35°C from March onwards. Pack light cotton clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and stay hydrated. Winter mornings (November–January) can be surprisingly cold and foggy — carry a light jacket for early-morning safaris.

Plan Your Assam Trip

Four days covers Assam's essentials — Guwahati's cultural sites and a proper Kaziranga safari. Add a fifth day for Majuli if river islands and monastery culture appeal to you. Assam is also the natural starting point for trips deeper into the Northeast: pair this with Meghalaya (Guwahati is the common gateway) or continue east to Nagaland or Arunachal Pradesh.
