Trip at a Glance

Mizoram is the least-visited state in Northeast India, which is exactly why you should go. Aizawl is one of the cleanest cities in the country, the Mizo people are famously hospitable, and the rolling bamboo-covered hills stretch endlessly in every direction. Four days covers Aizawl, a heritage village, and either Champhai or the Blue Mountain.

The 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Aizawl — City Exploration

Highlights: Bara Bazar, Durtlang viewpoint, Solomon's Temple

Fly into Lengpui Airport (AJL), 35 km from Aizawl city. Flights from Kolkata (1.5 hrs, 4,000–8,000 INR) and Guwahati (45 min, 3,000–6,000 INR). Airport taxi to Aizawl: 800–1,000 INR.

  • Bara Bazar: Aizawl's main market. Good for Mizo textiles (puan wraps), local snacks, and people-watching. The market spills across multiple levels of the hillside.
  • Durtlang Hills viewpoint: A 15-minute drive north of Aizawl for panoramic sunset views over the city and surrounding valleys. Best from 4–5 PM.
  • Solomon's Temple: A striking modern church perched on a hilltop. Visible from most of Aizawl. The views from the terrace are worth the visit regardless of faith.
TIP

Mizoram is a dry state — alcohol is not sold legally. Sunday is observed strictly — almost everything shuts down including restaurants and transport. Plan around it.

Day 2: Reiek Heritage Village Day Trip

Distance: 29 km from Aizawl  |  Drive: ~1 hour  |  Stay: Aizawl

Drive to Reiek, a traditional Mizo heritage village preserved to showcase the original way of life. The village has traditional bamboo-and-thatch houses, a chief's house, a bachelors' dormitory (zawlbuk), and a community meeting hall — all reconstructed faithfully.

  • Reiek Tlang (mountain): A short trek (1–1.5 hours) from the village to the summit. At the top: a viewpoint with panoramic views of the hills, valleys, and (on clear days) Myanmar in the distance.
  • Bamboo forest: The trail passes through dense bamboo groves. Quiet, photogenic, and a world away from city noise.
  • Anthurium Festival: If you are visiting in September, Reiek hosts the Anthurium Festival — Mizo cultural performances, flower displays, and traditional food. It is small, local, and charming.

Return to Aizawl by evening. Dinner: try bai (steamed vegetable stew with herbs) and sa-um (fermented pork) at a local restaurant.

Day 3: Champhai or Blue Mountain

Option A: Champhai (194 km, ~6 hrs)  |  Option B: Phawngpui Blue Mountain (from Thenzawl)

You have two choices depending on your interest:

Option A — Champhai: Drive east to Champhai, a town on the Myanmar border known as the rice bowl of Mizoram. The drive itself is stunning — hairpin bends through mountain ridges with valley views. In Champhai, visit the Rih Dil lake (a heart-shaped lake across the Myanmar border, visible from the Indian side), explore the town market, and enjoy views of Myanmar's Chin Hills. Stay overnight or drive back (long day).

Option B — Phawngpui (Blue Mountain): Drive to Thenzawl (90 km, 3 hrs), then continue to Phawngpui National Park. At 2,157 metres, Phawngpui is Mizoram's highest peak. The trek to the summit (3–4 hours round trip) takes you through rhododendron forests and orchid-covered slopes. On clear days, the mountain has a blue tint when viewed from afar, giving it its name. Requires a forest permit (arrange in Aizawl).

NOTE

Both options involve long drives on winding mountain roads. If you get car-sick easily, carry medication. Start early (6 AM) to make the most of daylight. Road conditions deteriorate significantly during monsoon (June–September).

Day 4: Return to Aizawl & Depart

Highlights: Mizoram State Museum, last shopping, departure

If returning from Champhai, you will arrive early. Visit the Mizoram State Museum near MacDonald Hill for a quick overview of Mizo tribal history, traditional costumes, and artefacts. Entry: 10 INR.

Last-minute shopping at Bara Bazar — pick up puan (traditional Mizo wrap textiles), bamboo crafts, and local chhurpi (dried cheese). Head to Lengpui Airport for your departure flight.

Essential Tips

  1. Get your ILP before you arrive. Apply online via the Mizoram government portal. Processing takes 3–5 days. Your ILP will be checked at the airport. Carry printed copies and a few passport-size photos.
  2. Avoid Sunday travel. Mizoram observes Sunday strictly. Shops, restaurants, and public transport shut down. Stock up on food and fuel on Saturday. Hotels remain open but do not expect much else.
  3. Carry cash. ATMs work in Aizawl but are unreliable elsewhere. UPI acceptance is very limited outside the city. Withdraw enough for all 4 days before heading to Champhai or Reiek.
  4. Respect the no-alcohol policy. Mizoram is a dry state. Alcohol is not available for purchase. Do not carry or consume alcohol in public — fines are steep.
  5. Learn a few Mizo phrases. English is widely understood in Aizawl, but in villages, basic Mizo goes a long way. "Ka lawm e" (thank you) and "Min hmangaih em?" (can you help me?) will earn you genuine smiles.
