The 4-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Imphal — City Exploration
Highlights: Kangla Fort, INA Museum, Ima Keithel
Fly into Imphal Airport (IMF). Direct flights from Delhi (3.5 hrs), Kolkata (1.5 hrs), and Guwahati (45 min). Check into your hotel and start exploring.
- Kangla Fort: The ancient seat of Manipuri kings, right in the centre of Imphal. Massive grounds with temples, museums, and the iconic Kangla Sha (dragon statues). Entry: 20 INR. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
- INA Museum (Moirang Road): Dedicated to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army's WWII campaign. Small but well-curated. Entry: 10 INR.
- Ima Keithel (Mothers' Market): Asia's largest all-women market — 5,000+ women vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handloom textiles. It is a remarkable sight and a great place to buy Manipuri shawls and local handicrafts. Open 6 AM–6 PM.
Day 2: Imphal → Loktak Lake
Distance: 48 km | Drive: ~1.5 hours | Stay: Imphal or Moirang
Drive south to Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. The lake is covered in phumdis — floating masses of vegetation, soil, and organic matter that look like green islands drifting on the water.
- Sendra Island: A hillock in the middle of the lake with a viewpoint offering 360-degree panoramas of the phumdis. There is a tourist bungalow here if you want to stay overnight (book through Manipur Tourism).
- Boat ride: Hire a local boat (300–500 INR for 1–2 hours) to weave through the floating phumdis. Early morning is best for light and birdwatching.
- Fishing villages: The lake is home to communities living on the phumdis themselves. You can see their floating huts from the boat.
Day 3: Keibul Lamjao & Moirang
Highlights: Floating national park, Sangai deer, INA Memorial
Morning: Visit Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world's only floating national park. Located on the southwestern edge of Loktak Lake, this park is the last natural habitat of the Sangai deer (Manipur's state animal, also called the dancing deer). Early morning visits (6–8 AM) give you the best chance of spotting them on the phumdis. Entry: 50 INR. Camera: 500 INR.
Afternoon: Visit the Moirang INA Memorial (15 km from the park). This is where the flag of the Indian National Army was first raised on Indian soil in 1944. The museum has WWII artefacts, photographs, and Netaji memorabilia. Entry: free.
Return to Imphal by evening.
Day 4: Imphal Shopping & Depart
Highlights: Khwairamband Bazaar, souvenirs, departure
Morning: Browse Khwairamband Bazaar for last-minute shopping. Pick up Manipuri handloom fabrics, local black pottery, and Naga Mircha hot sauce. Have a final meal of eromba (mashed vegetables with fermented fish) and singju (Manipuri salad).
Head to the airport for your departure flight.

Essential Tips
- Get your ILP before you arrive. Apply online via the Manipur government portal. Processing takes 3–7 days. You will be checked at Imphal airport on arrival. Carry printed copies.
- Visit Keibul Lamjao early. The Sangai deer are most active at dawn (6–8 AM). By mid-morning they retreat deeper into the phumdis. Bring binoculars if you have them.
- Carry cash. ATMs are available in Imphal but unreliable in Moirang and lake areas. UPI acceptance is limited outside Imphal city. Withdraw enough for all 4 days.
- Try the local food. Manipuri cuisine is distinct from the rest of India — fermented fish, bamboo shoots, and fresh herbs dominate. Eromba, singju, and chak-hao (black rice kheer) are must-tries.
- Hire a local taxi for days 2–3. A private taxi from Imphal covering Loktak Lake, Keibul Lamjao, and Moirang costs 2,000–3,000 INR per day. Shared transport to the lake area is infrequent.
