What Does a Meghalaya Trip Actually Cost?

Let's skip the fluff. A meghalaya trip cost for 5 days runs between 8,500 and 28,000 INR per person, excluding flights. Stretch it to 7 days and you're looking at 12,000 to 40,000 INR. Those numbers cover accommodation, food, local transport, and all activity fees.

The range is wide because Meghalaya lets you travel dirt-cheap or spend comfortably — more so than most Indian states. A dorm bed in Shillong costs 400 INR. A heritage cottage in Cherrapunji costs 9,000 INR. Same state, same beauty, very different receipts.

This guide breaks down every single expense category with real 2026 prices, then gives you a day-by-day cost table for both 5-day and 7-day trips. If you want the full route and logistics, pair this with our complete Meghalaya itinerary.

Getting to Meghalaya — Flight and Transport Costs

There's no commercial airport in Meghalaya yet. You fly into Guwahati (GAU) and then take ground transport to Shillong, which takes about 3 to 3.5 hours.

Flight Costs to Guwahati (2026 Estimates)

Book 3-4 weeks ahead for the best fares. Last-minute flights from Delhi can hit 12,000 INR one-way.

RouteBudget Fare (Advance)Typical FarePeak Season
Delhi to Guwahati3,500-5,000 INR5,500-7,500 INR8,000-12,000 INR
Mumbai to Guwahati4,500-6,500 INR7,000-9,000 INR10,000-14,000 INR
Kolkata to Guwahati2,500-3,500 INR4,000-5,500 INR6,000-8,000 INR
Bangalore to Guwahati5,000-7,000 INR7,500-10,000 INR11,000-15,000 INR

Kolkata is the cheapest gateway. If you're flexible on dates, midweek flights (Tuesday/Wednesday) typically save you 1,500-2,500 INR over weekend departures. For more ways to cut travel costs, check our cheapest ways to travel Northeast India guide.

TIP

The shared Sumo stand at Paltan Bazaar can be chaotic. Head straight there from the airport (auto costs 200-300 INR) and get in the next vehicle going to Shillong. Don't let anyone at the airport convince you shared Sumos cost 800 INR — that's the tourist markup.

Accommodation Costs in Meghalaya

Meghalaya has a decent range of stays, but don't expect the hotel density of Goa or Rajasthan. In smaller towns like Mawlynnong or Nongriat, options are limited and booking ahead matters.

Budget (800-1,500 INR/night)

Hostels in Shillong like Café Shillong Bed & Breakfast and Ri Kynjai Backpackers go for 400-600 INR for dorm beds and 800-1,200 INR for private rooms. In Cherrapunji, basic guesthouses near Sohra charge 800-1,500 INR. Rooms are clean, hot water is usually bucket-style, and WiFi works when it wants to.

In Dawki and Mawlynnong, homestays are the main option at 600-1,000 INR per person including a meal. These are some of the most genuine local experiences you'll have in the entire Northeast.

Mid-Range (2,000-4,000 INR/night)

Hotels like Hotel Polo Towers and Hotel Centre Point in Shillong give you proper rooms with heating, room service, and reliable hot water for 2,500-3,500 INR. In Cherrapunji, Coniferous Resort and Café Cherrapunjee offer cottages with valley views at 2,500-4,000 INR.

This is the sweet spot. You get comfort without blowing the budget, and most mid-range places include breakfast.

Comfortable (5,000-12,000 INR/night)

Ri Kynjai at Umiam Lake is the standout — lakeside cottages starting at 7,000 INR with Khasi-style architecture. In Cherrapunji, Jiva Resort and The Habitat Shillong both deliver the premium experience at 5,000-9,000 INR.

Honestly, you don't need to spend above 4,000 INR to be comfortable in Meghalaya. The luxury options are great, but the mid-range is unusually good here compared to other Northeast states.

Food Costs — What You'll Actually Pay

Meghalaya food is underrated. It's simple, pork-heavy, and surprisingly cheap if you eat where locals eat.

Daily Food Budget

Eating StyleCost Per DayWhat That Gets You
Street food + local restaurants400-600 INRRice + pork curry lunch, momos, tea, basic dinner
Mix of local and tourist restaurants800-1,200 INRProper sit-down meals, coffee shops in Shillong, occasional splurge
Tourist restaurants + cafes1,500-2,500 INRMulti-course meals, Continental options, Shillong cafe culture

Must-Try Dishes With Prices

  • Jadoh (red rice with pork): 80-120 INR at local eateries, 180-250 INR at tourist places
  • Doh Khlieh (pork salad with onions): 100-150 INR
  • Tungrymbai (fermented soybean chutney): 40-60 INR as a side
  • Momos (everywhere in Shillong): 40-80 INR per plate of 8
  • Kwai (betel nut, the Khasi snack): 10-20 INR — try it once for the experience, though it's an acquired taste
  • Ki Kpu (Khasi rice beer): 30-50 INR per glass

Shillong has a solid cafe scene. Places like Dylan's Cafe and Heritage Club charge 150-300 INR for a meal. Not cheap by local standards, but still half what you'd pay in Mumbai for the same food.

WARNING

If you're vegetarian, Meghalaya is manageable but limited. Shillong has veg restaurants, but once you're in Cherrapunji, Dawki, or the villages, options shrink fast. Carry snacks and don't expect a menu full of choices. Dal-rice will be your best friend outside the cities.

Transport Within Meghalaya

This is usually the biggest chunk of your meghalaya trip budget after accommodation. Meghalaya doesn't have a railway network or organized public bus system between tourist towns. You're looking at shared taxis or private cabs for most routes.

Shared Taxi Rates

RouteCost Per PersonDuration
Shillong to Cherrapunji200-300 INR2 hrs
Shillong to Dawki300-400 INR3-3.5 hrs
Shillong to Mawlynnong250-350 INR3 hrs
Cherrapunji to Nongriat trailhead150-200 INR30 min
Dawki to Mawlynnong150-200 INR45 min

Shared taxis leave from designated stands — Bara Bazaar in Shillong is the hub. They leave when full (usually 8-10 passengers in a Sumo). Mornings are your best bet; by afternoon, options dry up.

Private Cab Rates

Full day Shillong local sightseeing1,800-2,500 INR2,500-3,500 INR

Self-Drive Rental

This is getting more popular, especially for groups. Zoomcar and local rental agencies in Guwahati offer:

  • Hatchback (Swift, i20): 1,200-1,800 INR/day + fuel
  • SUV (Creta, Brezza): 2,000-3,000 INR/day + fuel
  • Fuel cost: Roughly 1,200-1,500 INR per day of active driving in Meghalaya

Self-driving is doable if you're comfortable with hilly roads, sharp hairpin turns, and occasional single-lane stretches with trucks coming from the other direction. The road to Cherrapunji is well-maintained. The road to Dawki has some rough patches. The drive itself is beautiful.

Split between 3-4 people, self-drive beats private cab rates and gives you complete freedom to stop at viewpoints.

Activity and Entry Fee Costs

Good news — Meghalaya is one of the cheapest states for tourist activities. Most natural attractions have minimal or no entry fees.

Costs are per person. Budget assumes sharing transport and rooms with a travel partner. Flights to Guwahati not included.

That 8,000 INR budget figure is tight but realistic. You'll be eating at local dhabas, taking shared Sumos everywhere, staying in dorms or basic guesthouses, and skipping the guide at Nongriat. Most solo backpackers I've talked to spend closer to 10,000-12,000 INR for 5 days once you add in the small stuff that's hard to plan for.

For the detailed route planning, our Meghalaya complete itinerary covers which places to see each day and in what order.

Money-Saving Tips That Actually Work

These aren't "book in advance" or "travel light" platitudes. These are specific to Meghalaya.

  1. Travel in a group of 3-4. Private cabs in Meghalaya are priced per vehicle, not per person. A Shillong-Cherrapunji cab at 2,500 INR split four ways is 625 INR each — barely more than a shared Sumo, but with the freedom to stop wherever you want.
  1. Eat at Ri Khwan-style restaurants. These unmarked local spots near markets serve rice, dal, pork, and vegetables for 70-100 INR per plate. The tourist-facing restaurants in Cherrapunji charge double for the same food.
  1. Stay at Nongriat instead of doing a day trip. The trek down and back in one day is exhausting and rushed. Staying overnight at one of the basic guesthouses (500-800 INR) means you skip the afternoon return climb in the heat, and you get the root bridges to yourself at sunrise.
  1. Book the Dawki boat early morning. Before 8 AM, boatmen are less busy and more willing to negotiate. You can get a 30-minute ride for 600-800 INR instead of the standard 1,000-1,200 INR that tourists pay later in the day.
  1. Skip the Shillong Peak taxi. Many cabs charge 500-800 INR to drive you up to Shillong Peak viewpoint. The view is good but not 800-INR-good, especially if it's cloudy. Laitlum Canyons is free and far more impressive.
  1. Carry a refillable water bottle. Bottled water costs 20-40 INR each time. You'll drink 3-4 per day. Over a week, that's 500-1,000 INR. Meghalaya has clean spring water in many areas — ask locals where to refill.
  1. Combine Dawki and Mawlynnong in one day. They're 45 minutes apart. Hiring separate transport for each is wasteful. One cab doing Dawki + Mawlynnong + return to Shillong costs 3,500-4,500 INR total — cheaper than two separate day trips.

Hidden Costs Most Travel Blogs Don't Mention

These small charges add up. Budget an extra 1,000-2,000 INR for the full trip to cover them.

Parking fees. Every major viewpoint and attraction charges 20-50 INR for parking. If you're in a private cab doing 4-5 stops per day, that's 100-250 INR daily that nobody factors in. Your driver will ask you for this at each stop.

Guide fees at Nongriat. The trek to the double-decker living root bridge doesn't require a guide — the path is well-marked. But if you want one (useful for the longer trails to Rainbow Falls), expect 500-800 INR. Some guides at the trailhead will pressure you into hiring them. It's your call, but the main route is manageable alone.

Camera fees. Mawsmai Cave and a few other spots charge an extra 20-30 INR for cameras. It's negligible, but it adds a few hundred rupees over the trip. Phone photography is usually free.

Porters for the Nongriat trek. If you're carrying a heavy backpack, local porters charge 300-500 INR to carry your bags down and back up the 3,500+ steps. Worth considering if you have knee problems.

Excess baggage on shared Sumos. Large backpacks sometimes attract a 50-100 INR surcharge in shared taxis. Keep your bags compact.

Mobile recharge in remote areas. Jio and Airtel work in Shillong and Cherrapunji town. Signal gets spotty in Dawki and disappears entirely in Nongriat. BSNL used to work in remote areas but coverage has gotten worse. Download offline maps before you leave Shillong.

Tips. Not expected but appreciated. Boat operators at Dawki, homestay hosts, and guides — 50-200 INR per interaction is standard.

Rain gear replacement. If you visit during monsoon or shoulder season and your cheap poncho tears (it will), buying a replacement in Cherrapunji costs 100-200 INR. Check our Northeast India packing list for what to bring so you don't end up buying things on the road.

Best Time to Visit Meghalaya for Budget Travelers

The season you pick directly affects your meghalaya trip expenses per person. Here's the honest breakdown.

SeasonMonthsWeatherHotel PricesCrowd LevelBudget Verdict
Peak (Winter)Oct-NovClear skies, 8-22°CHighest (20-40% markup)Packed at Dawki, busy at CherrapunjiWorst for budget
ShoulderSep, DecOccasional rain, coolModerateManageableGood balance
Off-season (Monsoon)Jun-AugHeavy rain, waterfalls at full forceLowest (discounts of 30-50%)Very few touristsBest for budget, worst for roads
Dry seasonFeb-AprWarming up, 15-28°CModerateModerateSecond best for budget

September and February-March are the sweet spots for budget travelers. Hotel rates haven't spiked yet, shared transport is available, and the weather cooperates most days.

October-November is when everyone goes. Dawki's "crystal clear river" photos come from this period. Accommodation fills up 2-3 weeks ahead and homestays raise their rates. You'll still find budget options, but they'll book out fast.

Monsoon (June-August) is the cheapest time to visit, but it comes with trade-offs. Cherrapunji gets 2,000-3,000 mm of rain in June alone. Roads get slippery. The Nongriat trek becomes dangerous with wet steps. Waterfalls are spectacular, but you'll be wet from morning to night. Not ideal for a first visit.

For a complete state-by-state seasonal guide, check best time to visit Northeast India.

TIP

If you're doing a budget trip to meghalaya, February is the goldilocks month. Dry weather, moderate hotel prices, comfortable temperatures, and smaller crowds than the Oct-Nov peak. The waterfalls aren't at full power, but Dawki's river is still clear.

Do You Need Permits for Meghalaya?

No. Indian citizens don't need any special permits (ILP or PAP) for Meghalaya. You can enter and travel freely.

Foreign nationals also don't need permits for Meghalaya itself. However, if you're combining Meghalaya with Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, or Mizoram, those states require permits that take 3-7 days to process.

If you're planning a multi-state Northeast trip, get the full details in our permits for Northeast India guide before you book anything.

Shillong Cherrapunji Trip Cost — The Quick Version

A lot of people search specifically for the shillong cherrapunji trip cost because that's the minimum Meghalaya experience. If you're short on time and just doing Shillong + Cherrapunji for 3 days, here's the snapshot:

CategoryBudget (3 Days)Mid-Range (3 Days)
Guwahati to Shillong (return)900 INR2,400 INR
Shillong to Cherrapunji (return)500 INR1,600 INR
Accommodation (2 nights)2,000 INR6,000 INR
Food (3 days)1,200 INR2,700 INR
Activities and entry fees200 INR700 INR
Total~4,800 INR~13,400 INR

That's per person, without flights. It's a tight 3 days, but it works if you can't take a longer break.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 5-day Meghalaya trip cost per person?

A budget 5-day Meghalaya trip costs approximately 8,000-10,000 INR per person excluding flights. Mid-range travelers spend 18,000-22,000 INR. This covers accommodation, food, local transport, and all entry fees. Add 4,000-10,000 INR for return flights to Guwahati depending on your departure city and how early you book.

Is Meghalaya expensive compared to other Northeast states?

Meghalaya is moderately priced. It's more expensive than Assam (cheaper food, more transport options) but cheaper than Sikkim or Arunachal Pradesh. The main cost driver in Meghalaya is local transport — there's no rail network and public buses between tourist spots are limited, so you end up paying for shared taxis or private cabs.

Can I do Meghalaya in 3 days on a tight budget?

You can cover Shillong and Cherrapunji in 3 days for around 4,800-5,500 INR per person. You'll miss Dawki, Mawlynnong, and the root bridge trek, which are arguably the highlights. If you only have 3 days, I'd still say go — Cherrapunji and the caves alone are worth the trip. But if there's any way to stretch it to 5 days, you'll see twice as much for only 3,000 INR more.

What's the cheapest month to visit Meghalaya?

July and August offer the lowest prices — accommodation rates drop 30-50% and you'll have most places to yourself. But the monsoon makes travel harder: muddy trails, slippery steps, unpredictable road conditions. February and early March give you the best balance of budget-friendly prices and comfortable travel conditions.

Should I carry cash or can I use UPI in Meghalaya?

Carry cash. UPI works at hotels and restaurants in Shillong and Cherrapunji town, but it's unreliable in Dawki, Mawlynnong, Nongriat, and most rural areas. Shared taxi drivers, boat operators, and small food stalls are cash-only. Withdraw enough from Shillong's ATMs before heading out — the next reliable ATM after Shillong could be 3-4 hours away.

Is it cheaper to book a Meghalaya package or travel independently?

Independent travel is almost always cheaper. Package tours from Guwahati-based operators charge 18,000-35,000 INR per person for 5 days, which covers the same things you can arrange yourself for 10,000-19,000 INR. The markup pays for the convenience of someone else handling logistics. If you're comfortable with shared taxis and booking your own homestays, save the money and go independent.

WARNING

Don't confuse "per person on twin sharing" prices with actual per-person costs. Many package operators and hotel listings quote rates assuming two people share a room. If you're traveling solo, your accommodation costs will be 40-60% higher than the numbers in most budget tables — including this one. Solo travelers: budget an extra 2,000-3,000 INR for 5 days to account for single-occupancy room rates.
