How this Northeast India trip planner works

Picking the right Northeast India destination is the hardest part of planning your trip. With 8 states across 262,000 sq km — Sikkim's Himalayan high passes, Meghalaya's waterfalls and living-root bridges, Arunachal's monasteries, Kaziranga's rhinos in Assam, Nagaland's tribal heritage — there is no single "best" answer. The right state depends on what excites you, how many days you have, when you can travel, and what you're willing to spend.

This quiz cuts through the noise. Four questions about your time, interests, budget, and travel companions — and we recommend the destination, route, and trip length that match your travel style. The result page links to a complete day-by-day itinerary plus the related guides you'll need (permits, packing list, budget breakdown).

Which Northeast India state should you pick?

A quick decision shortcut if you don't want to take the quiz:

  • First-time visitors with 5-6 days: Meghalaya. Best infrastructure, no permits for Indians, the iconic photogenic spots (Cherrapunji, Dawki, Mawlynnong) without the altitude or remoteness of Arunachal or Sikkim's far north.
  • Mountain + monastery lovers: Sikkim (easier, well-trodden) or Arunachal Pradesh (rawer, requires permits and 4WD-quality roads).
  • Wildlife and photography: Assam — Kaziranga National Park for one-horned rhinos, Manas for tigers. Easiest to combine with Meghalaya via Guwahati.
  • Tribal culture and festivals: Nagaland during Hornbill Festival (Dec 1-10), Arunachal's Apatani villages in Ziro Valley.
  • Offbeat with no crowds: Mizoram, Manipur, or Tripura. Lower tourist density, harder logistics, more rewarding for repeat visitors.

When should you visit Northeast India?

October to April is the broad peak season — clear skies, comfortable temperatures, festivals running. Specifics:

  • October-November: Best for everywhere. Post-monsoon clarity, Hornbill Festival prep in Nagaland, manageable crowds.
  • December-February: Snow in high Sikkim and Tawang (Arunachal). Crystal water at Dawki peaks in winter. Cold but spectacular for photography.
  • March-April: Rhododendrons bloom in Sikkim's Yumthang Valley and Arunachal. Wildlife sightings peak at Kaziranga before monsoon.
  • May-September (monsoon): Skip for first trips. Roads wash out in Arunachal and Meghalaya. The exception — Cherrapunji during peak rainfall is otherworldly if you accept the inconvenience.

Frequently asked questions

Is this quiz a replacement for a proper itinerary?

No — it's a starting point. The quiz tells you which destination matches your travel style. From there, follow the linked day-by-day itinerary, or fill out our free custom trip request form if you want a personalised plan delivered to your inbox in 24 hours.

Do I need permits for the destination the quiz recommends?

Indians need Inner Line Permits (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and parts of Sikkim and Manipur. Meghalaya, Assam, and Tripura need none. Foreigners need Protected Area Permits (PAP) for restricted states — usually processed by your tour operator. Full breakdown in our permits guide.

How much should I budget?

A realistic mid-range Northeast India trip in 2026 costs ₹25,000-35,000 per person for 5-6 days from Delhi (all-inclusive of flights). Budget travellers can do the same trip for ₹15,000-20,000 by using homestays and shared transport. Luxury runs ₹50,000+. Use our interactive trip cost calculator for a per-state, per-tier breakdown.

Can I cover multiple states in one trip?

For first-timers we recommend one or two adjacent states max. Meghalaya + Assam (via Guwahati) is the easiest combo — fly into Guwahati, do Kaziranga, then drive 5 hours to Shillong. Sikkim + Darjeeling is another natural pairing. Trying to do four states in seven days means spending most of your trip in transit.

Why trust these recommendations?

Our team has spent collective decades travelling and researching across all 8 Northeast states. Recommendations are based on actual trips, not desk research. We don't sell tours directly — we point you to vetted local operators and tell you the real picture, including the inconvenient parts (slow roads in Arunachal, limited connectivity in Mizoram, monsoon flooding in low Assam).
