FAQs — Dawki & Shnongpdeng Hotels & Stays

Where exactly is the Umngot river camping — Dawki or Shnongpdeng?
The crystal-clear Umngot river boating happens at Dawki, but the camping is mostly in the adjacent village of Shnongpdeng, 10 minutes upstream. Most travellers stay at Shnongpdeng (better atmosphere) and day-trip to Dawki for boating.
Are Dawki tents safe in monsoon?
Tents are NOT recommended June-September — the river floods, the road can be cut off, and many operators close. The boating itself happens only when water is clear; in monsoon, the river runs muddy. Plan for October-April.
Can I do a day-trip from Shillong instead of staying?
Yes — Dawki is 80 km / 2.5 hr from Shillong. A day-trip works if you leave Shillong by 7 AM, but you'll miss the magical sunset and clear-morning boating. Overnight at Shnongpdeng (or Cherrapunji) is worth the trade.
Do Shnongpdeng homestays accept cards?
Mostly cash only. Carry ₹2,000-3,000 per person in cash. The nearest ATMs are in Pynursla (15 km) or Shillong. Some premium camps accept UPI.
