Guwahati Airport to Shillong — Taxi, Sumo & Bus Guide 2026

Most Northeast India trips start here: you land at Guwahati airport, and you need to cover 100 km of mountain road to Shillong. This guide gives you exact 2026 fares for every option, the realistic journey time, and how to pre-book online so you don't arrive jet-lagged into a taxi-stand bidding war.

Your 4 options compared

1. Pre-booked private taxi (recommended) — ₹3,500–4,500

Pre-booking online via KiwiTaxi (or local operators) gets you a fixed-price private cab waiting at the arrivals gate with your name on a placard. No haggling, no surprise tolls, no "driver wants extra ₹500" nonsense. Pay online, confirm by email, just walk out.

When this makes sense: You have 2-4 people, luggage, you arrive late at night, or you simply value not negotiating after a flight.

2. Walk-in airport prepaid taxi — ₹4,000–5,000

The airport has a prepaid taxi counter just outside arrivals. Slightly more expensive than online (counter operators take a margin), no advance booking, but reliable. Cash only.

3. Shared Sumo / shared cab — ₹500 per seat

The cheapest option. Walk 5 minutes from the airport exit to the highway shared-Sumo stand. Wait for a 7-seater Tata Sumo to fill (10-30 min), then drive to Shillong's Police Bazaar in ~3 hours. Quality of vehicle varies.

When this makes sense: Solo budget traveler, comfortable with shared transport, daytime arrival, light luggage.

4. State-run Meghalaya Tourism bus — ₹250

Meghalaya Transport Corporation runs 4 daily buses between Guwahati ISBT (not the airport — you have to taxi to ISBT first, ~₹400) and Shillong. Cheapest option but adds 1-2 hours of total travel time and an extra leg. Only worth it for shoestring backpackers.

Pre-book your transfer (no arrival haggling)

Step-by-step booking guide

  1. 3-5 days before arrival — book your private taxi via KiwiTaxi or MakeMyTrip cabs. Lock in fixed fare (~₹3,500-4,500) and get email confirmation with driver phone number.
  2. Day of arrival — driver tracks your flight. They're waiting at arrivals with a placard with your name. Verify the booking number on the placard matches your email.
  3. Stop at Nongpoh (45 min from Guwahati) — bathroom break, snacks, last petrol pump for hours. The MTM (Meghalaya Tourism) restaurant is reliable.
  4. Stop at Umiam Lake viewpoint (15 km before Shillong) — gorgeous photo stop, especially at sunset. Free parking, 10 minutes is enough.
  5. Arrive at your hotel — driver drops you at your booked accommodation, not at a generic taxi stand. Tip ₹100-200 if service was good (not mandatory).

FAQ — Guwahati to Shillong

Is Uber or Ola available at Guwahati airport?

Yes, both operate but neither is reliable for the Shillong route — drivers often refuse or cancel last-minute because it's a multi-hour intercity job. Pre-booked private cab via KiwiTaxi/MakeMyTrip is far more reliable.

Can I rent a self-drive car for the journey?

Self-drive is possible (Zoomcar, Revv operate at Guwahati airport) but we don't recommend it for first-time NE visitors. Local driving culture, narrow mountain stretches, and the lack of overnight parking in Shillong's old town make a chauffeur-driven cab the easier choice.

Is the road safe at night?

The NH-6 highway is well-paved and patrolled, but most drivers prefer not to drive after 8 pm because of fog and limited road lighting in mountain stretches. If your flight lands after 7 pm, expect to spend the night in Guwahati and drive in the morning.

Is the journey carsick-friendly?

Mostly yes — the road has gentle hairpins, not extreme switchbacks. Sensitive travelers should take a Avomine before departure. The last 30 km (Nongpoh → Shillong) has more curves.

What about return — Shillong to Guwahati airport?

Same options, same fares. For early flights (before 9 am) you must leave Shillong by 4 am to be safe. Most hotels arrange airport drops for ₹3,800-4,200.
