Mawsynram rainfall record — by the numbers
Mawsynram's annual rainfall averages 11,872 mm (467 in) — that's nearly 12 metres of rain falling on this single village every year. To put that in context:
- Mumbai (monsoon city): 2,400 mm — Mawsynram gets 5× more.
- London (notoriously wet): 590 mm — Mawsynram gets 20× more.
- Cherrapunji (former record holder, 16 km away): 11,777 mm — Mawsynram edges out by 95 mm.
- Single-day record at Mawsynram: 1,563 mm in 24 hours (June 2022). That's half of Mumbai's annual rainfall in one day.
- Peak month: July averages 3,000 mm — 100 mm of rain every single day.
The Guinness Book of World Records officially recognised Mawsynram as the wettest inhabited place on Earth in 1985, overtaking Cherrapunji. Both villages still trade record monthly highs depending on the year — but Mawsynram holds the long-term average crown.
Why is Mawsynram the wettest place on Earth?
Three geographical factors combine to make Mawsynram extraordinarily wet:
- Bay of Bengal proximity. Mawsynram sits on the southern slopes of the Khasi Hills, directly in the path of monsoon clouds rolling north from the Bay of Bengal.
- Funnel effect of the Khasi Hills. The hills form a V-shaped basin that channels moisture-laden air upward. As the clouds hit the hills, they cool rapidly and dump their water.
- Bangladesh's flat plain to the south. Before monsoon clouds reach Mawsynram, they cross Bangladesh's flat alluvial plains where they pick up additional moisture from rice paddies and the Brahmaputra delta. No barriers slow them down.
The result: 1,300+ mm of rain in a typical July, with most of it concentrated in afternoon downpours. Local Khasi farmers have adapted by building "knup" rain shields — full-body bamboo umbrellas worn over the head and shoulders so both hands stay free for working in the fields.
How to reach Mawsynram

Things to do in Mawsynram
1. Mawjymbuin Cave (limestone & shiva linga)
Mawsynram's main attraction. A natural limestone cave with a stalagmite naturally shaped like a Shiva linga, considered sacred by local Khasi communities. Entry ₹20. 30-minute walk inside. Slippery in monsoon — wear grip shoes.
2. Mawsynram Village Walk
The village itself is the experience. 1,000 residents, traditional Khasi houses with bamboo "knup" rain shields hung outside, terraced betel-leaf farms, and panoramic views of Bangladesh on clear days. Best in October-November when skies briefly clear.
3. Khasi Heritage Village
A cluster of traditional homes preserved as a living museum. See how Khasi people have adapted home design to extreme rainfall — high stone foundations, slanted bamboo roofs, indoor cooking hearths.
4. Local rainfall measuring station
Photograph the rain gauge that recorded the world records. Located near the village school.
5. Border viewpoint (Bangladesh views)
A 3 km trek/drive south of Mawsynram gives you uninterrupted views over Bangladesh's flatlands. On clear days you can see 80 km into Bangladesh.

Frequently asked questions
Is Mawsynram safe to visit?
Yes. Meghalaya is among the safest states in India for tourists. Mawsynram itself is a quiet village with friendly Khasi locals. The main caution is road safety in monsoon — landslides occasionally close the Shillong-Mawsynram road for hours.
Do I need permits for Mawsynram?
No. Meghalaya has no permit requirements for Indian citizens. Foreign nationals don't need PAP either (it's not in restricted-area zones).
Can I see Mawsynram from Cherrapunji?
No, they're 16 km apart with hills between. You need to drive between them — about 45 minutes via Sohbar/Pomshutia road.
What languages are spoken in Mawsynram?
Khasi (the local language), Hindi, and English. Tour guides and homestay owners typically speak basic English. Younger residents are fluent in Hindi.
Is there mobile network in Mawsynram?
Jio works best. Airtel and BSNL have spotty coverage. Wi-Fi at homestays is unreliable. Plan to be partially offline during your visit.
How many days for Mawsynram?
1 day is enough as a day-trip from Cherrapunji or Shillong. If you want to experience the village more deeply, stay 1-2 nights. Most people pair it with 2-3 days exploring Cherrapunji and Dawki.
